short models

You don't need to be statuesque to become a model. Women who are 5'5" and under can be signed with an agency as long they know their limits and their strengths. If you work where your strengths play out then you can be more successful.

Edit Steps

  1. 1
Take a few photographs of yourself to see how you respond to the lens. Your face and your ability to work with it in front of the camera are two key characteristics an agency will look at first. Consider getting the photos professionally done. Professional photography, even if it is expensive, will give you a better idea of what kind of look you project. You will eventually need these photographs to snag an interview, so think of it as a worthwhile investment!
  2. short models

Do some research on modeling agencies. Check out their websites and their signed girls to see how well you fit in. Concentrate on girls with your height, and compare your measurements and looks with them to see how you stack up. There are agencies that represent girls who are 5'5" and under, but be realistic: these agencies will most likely not be well-known.
  3.
  4. short models

Consider your options. Taking the road less traveled might work in your favor.

    • Consider going to other countries to pursue a modeling career. Models in Asia are usually under 5'6", and it may be easier for you to find work there.
    • Look outside of New York, Los Angeles, or any other major city where supermodels are most apt to be signed. Instead, look at agencies in smaller cities. It is better to start small and work your way up.
    • Consider going into catalog work, as this is an area with a lot of work, and which uses all body shapes. Catwalk models have strict height and weight guidelines, so that they actually fit into the clothes that are made!
  5. 4
Work on your body and your attitude. Because models are generally 5'8" or taller, shorter girls will have to make up for this deficit by overcompensating with other attributes. Don't give an agency an excuse to let you go. Tone up, slim down (if necessary), and work on your confidence and physical expression. You may have to take impromptu photos for the interviewer to see how capable you are at working with your face. Concentrate on your eyes, and learn how to project different emotions without moving the rest of your face.
  6. 5
Commercial print agencies accept models of all heights, and sizes. Also Parts modeling agencies work with models for parts modeling including hand modeling, shoe modeling, body modeling, hair and shoe modeling, and these are very in style in the modeling business, it is not just fashion. A petite successful model is Isobella Jade. You are a perfect girl/boy to become a model. Don't let anyone slow you down.

Edit Tips

  • Follow these steps in addition to the instructions for how to become a model.
  • You're likely to be most successful if you remain realistic and market yourself correctly. If you're 5ft3, it's unlikely you're going to be opening a show at New York Fashion Week in the near future so don't get too hung up on aiming for such jobs.
  • Remember that many successful models are under 5'8. Kate Moss, for example, is only 5'7, and she is still regarded as one of the most prominent fashion icons.

Edit Warnings

  • If you main aim is the agency sign, do not put your profile up on any website that boasts itself as being a hub for up and coming models to be discovered. There is a small chance that a reputable agency will discover you there, and you can instead be contacted by a fake agency that just wants to take your money.short models

  • There are a lot of people out to exploit a pretty face. Don't let the idea of fame and fortune lure you inside when it's not backed up by something solid. Read some of the horror stories online to know what to avoid. Talk to real models and ask them what they would recommend, where they learned their biggest lessons, what their bests and worst times were. Get informed. Although this is important for all would-be models, it is even more so for shorter girls who will probably have to take non-mainstream routes.

Instructions

    • 1
Learn what makes a good pose. Dance and yoga poses work well, but you don't need to be a dancer or know yoga. Artists are looking for angles, bends, shapes -- anything that breaks up the symmetry of the human body. Look at art books and classic paintings for inspiration.
Posing for a class usually involves holding poses for shorter periods of time at the beginning of the class, to give the class opportunities to draw many different poses in a relatively short amount of time. You might be asked to hold a pose for one minute, then change to another for 10 minutes. Short poses are a good time to do difficult or dynamic poses.
    • 2
Stretch before the modeling session. It's much easier to get into difficult or twisted poses if you're limber.
    • 3
Take a shower beforehand. A clean model is much more pleasant to work with.
    • 4
Eat something before modeling. Typical classes are three hours in length. There is nothing more frustrating and potential embarrassing than getting hungry during a session and having a grumbling tummy.
    • 5
Bring a robe or cover-up. In a student setting, you're almost never asked to disrobe in front of the class. You'll have a place to change into your robe, which you'll wear before the class. When you and the class are ready, you'll be asked to remove your robe. Sometimes, if the pattern or cut is interesting, it can be used as a drape in the pose.
    • 6
Choose something to focus on if you will be holding a pose for 30 minutes or more. This will help you after return to the same position after a break. For long sessions where you're holding one pose, the artist might place masking tape on various places of the pedestal or seating arrangement that line up with parts of your body.
    • 7
Let the artist or instructor know if you need to move while posing. You can stretch a leg or arm for a moment if you're holding a difficult pose, but don't do so unexpectedly. Also don't expect conversation while you're posing, unless you're friends with the artist or the class or artist engages you in it first. Most artists get into some pretty deep levels of concentration.
    • 8
Wear your robe or cover-up during breaks. Some models are so comfortable with being nude they don't bother to cover up, but even though the artists have been drawing you nude, they might not be comfortable with you walking around nude out of the "model" role.

Model Posing Advice

One key to a modeling career is learning posing techniques and positions. This tutorial is for new female models but experienced women can benefit from step by step posing videos and other methods.
As a photographer, I have studied many poses but, while I was gathering facts for this article, I was quite surprised to find some of the situations I thought were settled long ago are actually still being openly discussed in the modeling world - posing is just one of the topics.

Whether you are searching for a career in fashion modeling or maybe glamour, it is very important for you to realize that there is more to becoming a model than just standing there looking beautiful. In this simple guide to posing the female model you'll learn the difference between the portrait pose and the look and feel professional models portray.

One very important factor in becoming a good model is posing, and in order for you to learn the different poses needed for the type of modeling career you are seeking it will take practice, practice, practice.

Make Your Posing Moves Look Natural

When preparing for your photo shoot, there are numerous steps you can take to ensure you are comfortable while posing and your photos will look more natural. Mostly, this comes from experience in front of the photographer's camera. The more you practice and set up photo shoots, the more your posing will appear as if you just "walked into the picture".

Get Posing Ideas from Other Sources
Before you head to your photo shoot, pick at least ten good modeling poses you really like from fashion or glamour magazines, or poses you’ve learned from previous photo shoots. Take time to practice each pose in front of a mirror until you feel comfortable and have the confidence of knowing you look great doing these poses.

Hands and Facial Expression
Also, focus on what to do with your hands and pay attention to facial expressions. A pose is virtually dead and unimaginative without a “look”. You should be able to close your eyes, imagine a thought, open your eyes and sell that thought. Practice this technique and your photos will come alive.

Become an Idea Factory
Unless you are shooting for an advertising agency or some other type of special interest session many photographers recommend that you bring some of your own posing ideas to the shoot. In addition to your ideas, the photographer may have his or her own idea of how the session should go. The secret is, once you've learned a brand new pose, keep the photo seperate so you can look at it later in your daily practice session.

Build Rapport with Your Photographer
Always work with a photographer you feel you can trust. This will make communication between the two of you easier and give you the confidence to express your own ideas. Always listen to what the photographer tells you. If you are really uncomfortable with the pose, let your photographer know how you feel, in a nice way. Remember, he is looking through the camera lens and might see something you don’t.

If the photographer says she wants something different in the pose, try looking away from the camera or giving a unique facial expression. This is where your practice in front of the mirror really pays. Once you begin to move beyond basic background information, you begin to realize that there's more to posing for female models than you may have first thought. But, just take one step at a time and you'll be amazed at how fast you will learn new poses and add them to your idea file.

Posture for Model Posing
When posing you should always keep good posture unless the photographer instructs you to do otherwise. Hold your stomach muscles in to give your abdomen a more toned appearance. If you have gained a few pounds stick out your chin a little to avoid the appearance of a double chin in your photos. Relax your shoulders but bear down just a little. Back straight but not stiff.

Keep your fingers slightly apart and pointed away from the lens. Let your hands fall naturally into position whenever possible. Remember, you want to be yourself – on purpose. Now that you have learned what to do, consider these things you should try to avoid while posing.

Things to Avoid when Posing for a Photographer

Misplaced Body Language
Body language and expressions come naturally but the language you are projecting might not be what your photographer wants in a particular pose. You need to consciously focus on ways to prevent these habits while posing.

Don’t hold your breath during a pose. Stay relaxed and your photos will look as if you just happened to be sitting this way when the photographer walked up. In most pose situations you want your arms, legs, wrists, etc. slightly bent unless you are directed to do otherwise Most people don’t stand or sit with their arms and legs completely stiff. A good point to remember is, if it will bend, bend it.

Mona Lisa Smile?
Another posing tip to remember is that you don’t always have to smile. You should have a good variety of smiling and serious looks. But, sometimes you will want to give a large, openmouthed laugh. If you are supposed to be happy, look the part! I've posted a video showing a few facial expression poses for teenagers you might find helpful as a starting point.

Your Eyes are the Windows to Your Soul
Don’t always look straight into the camera. When you cut your eyes to the left or right, you create an air of mystery. When you look up and away, you are annoyed. Tilt your chin slightly down and look straight ahead for a sexy look.

About Blinking
Beware of the Blink! If you have to blink, try to blink between exposures. This is not always easy, especially if you are working in a photography studio. Some models get into a habit of anticipating the strobes and start to close their eyes when the picture is about to be snapped. Get into the habit of not paying attention to the flash and concentrate wholly on the pose, your body language, hand position, etc. and your images will come out as you expect.

Be Bold with Your New Posing Ideas!!
Never be afraid to try out some of your own poses in front of your photographer. Most photographers are glad to hear suggestions and posing ideas from you.

How do You See Yourself in Pictures?
When you look at your final images don’t be critical of yourself. Find positive ways to improve your posing. Discover your strengths and weaknesses and shoot for the stars. I am certain that Tyra Banks still works on her appearance and her posing artistry even though she has achieved a degree of stardom. Shouldn’t you?
