Black and White, the digital way

Starting digital black and white

This article is an extended version of one Keith wrote for Canon Europe (issue 11).
It is aimed at showing some of the basic principles involved in digital black and white photography.
The quality of conversions is discussed later, since if you are going to be producing the best black and white prints, the conversion technique can make quite a difference.

There is much more information on conversion and printing in the Digital Black and White section of this site. This article dates from several years ago, but is still valid.

High quality Black and White

Black and white goes back to the very origins of photography.
Early plates and films had limited sensitivity to longer (red) wavelengths of light and produce a certain interpretation of the subject.
Later films had a much more even response to colours (panchromatic) that led to a different ‘look’.
It was soon discovered that using coloured filters in front of the lens also altered the image. The differing chemistry and manufacturing processes adopted by various manufacturers resulted in different films producing subtly different renditions of the same scene.
For example, a red filter cuts out some of the blue light from the sky while still letting through the red component of the white light reflected from clouds.
This results in darker skies, which emphasise the clouds.

An interview with Keith Cooper

Keith was recently interviewed for a magazine feature [2007], all about black and white digital photography, particularly some of the examples in the Gallery.
We've taken many of the notes from the interview and put them onto this article.
Keith has added some additional pictures and information to expand on some of his replies.

Digital Black and White

Thanks to Josie Reavely of Digital Photographer magazine for asking the questions in the first place to make me think hard about different aspects of my work!
The article aimed at people who may be familiar with colour digital photography, but have not really tried black and white before. Hopefully some of it will also be of interest to those coming to digital black and white, but with an existing knowledge of B/W film techniques.
This first article covers black and white digital photography in general, the second articlecovers aspects of digital black and white printing.
Note, the opinions in the interview represent the personal views of Keith Cooper and not Northlight Images

It's often said that removing colour from a photo can add something to it – revealing detail that you wouldn't otherwise have noticed.

Would you agree with this? / Do you have any examples where this is the case?

Disgraced baseball legend Pete Rose to star in reality show chronicling his impending wedding to Playboy model

Former Major League Baseball superstar Pete Rose has signed on to film a reality show with TLC.

The controversial player, who was banned from the Baseball Hall of Fame after accusations surfaced that he bet on the games he played in and managed, has begun production on five episodes set to air later this air.

The show, which has the working title The Pete Rose and the Kiana Kim Family Project, will chronicle the 71-year-old's impending wedding to fiancee Kiana Kim, a 30-something Playboy model .

Baseball Legend: Pete Rose will star in a reality show about his impending nuptials to Playboy model Kiana Kim

The cameras promise to trail Rose taking the family to visit the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown and cover Kim getting a breast reduction.

'We’re not a traditional family,' says Kim. 'We are a total modern-day family, mixing the cultures, the ages, the different backgrounds together.'

'I didn’t even know who Pete Rose was when I first met him. It’s kind of a crazy story, but at the core of every family is love and it’s what TLC wants to show.

Rose also said that the show will afford him the opportunity to clear up misconceptions that he believes the public has about him.

'People will get a chance to see what kind of personality I have — and she has,' he said. '... we go through the same things everybody else does: taking the braces off, making sure they get their education and they go to basketball practice or acting class.'

The happy couple: The age gap has concerned Pete's adult children

'It’s not going to be classless — like it seems like a lot of reality shows aren’t really reality, but our reality show is going to be funny, entertaining, and real.'

The couple, who went on Howard Stern's radio show in 2010 to discuss their active love life, share their struggles with Pete’s adult children who have voiced their skepticism regarding the engagement.

Pete also considers appealing the Baseball Commissioner again to discuss reinstatement - the all-time major league leader in hits, games played, at-bats and outs was forced to permanently retire from baseball in 1989.

'Pete is one of sport’s most controversial characters, and his life is even more fascinating off the field as it was on,' says Amy Winter of TLC.
